Poultry buying and selling tips

Most of you probably already know how to sell in an auction format but for those who don't or want more guidance here are some hints and tips:
  1. Take a really good picture of the actual birds that are being sold in the auction.  Make sure the picture captures the markings and colouring of the birds along with a healthy comb, bright eyes and plumage.
  2. If selling hatching eggs take a good picture of the parent birds and make sure the description states the birds shown are the parent stock - this will eliminate anyone thinking you are selling the birds themselves.
  3. Always list in the title what you are selling - for example birds/hatching eggs.  Always put the quantity - for example pair/trio if birds 6/12/18/24 if hatching eggs.
  4. If selling birds state the breed, sex, age, type of fowl (bantam, large fowl, soft feathered etc) and whether they are related/unrelated.
  5. If selling chicks state breed, age, sexed/unsexed and quantity.
  6. Give a background to your birds - for example, are they free range, what are they fed on, are they used to human contact, characteristics etc.
  7. If you are selling live birds it might be wise to list for a 7 day period to give people a chance to have a look.  It may also be beneficial to end the auction on a Thurs/Fri to give buyers an opportunity to pick up their birds over the weekend.

REMEMBER - the more information you can give about the item you are selling, the better.

Please be really honest when selling birds/hatching eggs/chicks as you would not like to be deceived yourselves and if we do find out you have sold an aged bird passed off as POL we will contact you and could take further action.  We are sure all our members appreciate this and thank you for your co-operation with this.

NB - taking pictures with a digital camera and placing these on your computer (via a usb cable in to a usb port) into a file will allow you to up upload pictures quickly and easily.  Please remember to resize your photos to small or 800 in order for the files to be uploaded correctly.  Resizing does not alter the photograph in any way other than reducing it for ease of uploading.

We wish everyone the best of luck and hope you all have a happy buying and prosperous selling year ahead.
