Into the EU and Internationally

Having had requests from international members we have looked in to the implications of exporting birds and/or hatching eggs out of the UK and into other countries.

There are two sections to exporting from the UK

  1. Export to EU Member States and
  2. Export to International countries (outside the EU).

Within Defra there is an Export Team (01228 403600 then press #4 for poultry) who deal with applications to export birds out of the UK and there is an Import Team (01245 358383) who deal with the importation of birds to the UK.

Having spoken to the Defra Export Team at length it is perfectly legal to export birds from the UK to the EU or Internationally.  However, International exports paperwork differs from Country to Country so please be careful.

If you decide that you would like to export your stock/hatching eggs you will need to make an application to Defra to obtain an export certificate.  This is only issued after a Vet has visited the premises and concluded the necessary tests.  Defra has confirmed that the turnaround for obtaining an export certificate is 10 days from receipt of application.  Defra also said that it is the sellers responsibility to obtain an import license for the country of destination as stock/eggs can be turned away at customs.  However, if you choose to export we would recommend you asking the buyer to assist in this process.

The above applies for less than 20 birds/eggs.  If you intend to sell more than this in one batch you must become a Member of the Poultry Health Scheme.

We at bid4poultry have no problems with Members exporting birds abroad through the site.  However, we do require you to comply with legislation that is in place.  Any member found to be exporting without the relevant documentation will have their account suspended and/or terminated at our discretion and they will be reported to Defra.

For further information and guidance you can contact Defra direct or visit the Defra website.  There are also links to the relevant pages, for your convenience, under our ‘Links’ section.

You will appreciate that we are policing the site so that stock bought and sold is of a high standard in order to promote healthy trade activity and to safeguard both buyers and sellers alike - so we thank you for your co-operation in regards to this.
